Welcome

The mission of the Franciscans is to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke 4:18-19 says that Jesus came to bring the good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

The Franciscan Network on Migration brings together the franciscan family and allies who are working on behalf of migrants and refugees in the Americas, in migrant centers and shelters, parishes, and other ministries.

This initiative of the Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation of the Order of Friars Minor is building a systematic, integral and focused attention to finding solutions for specific problems related to forced displacement, particularly for the people of Central America.

We facilitate mutual support, experiential learning, promotion of best practices, and coordinated advocacy efforts.

We aim to articulate, protect, train and disseminate information. We offer holistic accompaniment to displaced people and influence the transformation of structural causes that originate and maintain lethal human displacement in the region.

Through our network, we will raise, systematize and disseminate human rights information in order to influence local and regional migration policies and compliance with the laws to protect migrants and refugees, in Central America, Mexico and the United States.

We follow Pope Francis in his call to welcome, promote, integrate and protect people suffering from forced mobility in the region, offering comprehensive support in their movement.

The current humanitarian crisis on our southern border calls us to compassion and mercy as well as greater understanding. The Franciscan Network for Migrants–USA Team organized a three-day experience for a total of 28 people who witnessed firsthand the impact of US and state policies towards our migrant brothers and sisters.

Capacity-Building

Members of the Network are already providing a myriad of resources to migrants. Network members will be able to enhance each other’s work by sharing information and resources via different media (bulletins, meetings and gatherings, capacity-building seminars, resource and route maps, threat advisories, etc.) that they can then pass on to migrants in their care along the route.s.

Support and Protection

Members of the Network will foster the establishment of migrant centers, shelters and houses of refuge in areas where there is a lack of resources by connecting donors to new and ongoing programs.

Advocacy and Collaboration.

Fidelity to the Gospel message compels us to not only to recognize the face of Christ in the poor and the excluded, but also to engage in a social analysis to identify the processes of impoverishment and exclusion e.g. root causes, agents, victims, mechanisms and consequences.
